Use the right health services over the Easter bank holidays

The local NHS expects to see an increase in pressures on the health system this week as lockdown rules are eased and the Easter bank holidays close some services.

As GP surgeries and some pharmacies will be closed for the bank holiday, people need to know where to go if they do become unwell – including not going to A&E unless it is a real emergency.

GP surgeries will be closed during the Easter weekend, including Good Friday (2 April) and Easter Monday (5 April) but many minor illnesses, ailments and injuries can be treated at home. Coughs, colds, sore throats, upset stomachs and aches and pains can be treated with a well-stocked medicine cabinet and plenty of rest.

Pharmacies

You can get everything you need as well as expert advice from your local pharmacy. Many of the pharmacies will be closed over the bank holiday weekend, so make sure you collect any items you need, along with repeat prescriptions, ahead of the weekend.

NHS 111

For anything more serious, that doesn’t require a 999 response, people are urged to contact NHS 111 by phone or online (111.nhs.uk) first. The service has been expanded during the pandemic and is now the best way to access urgent care services.

The trained call handlers will be able to direct you to the right service for your needs including a number of hospital specialities. If you do need to go to hospital or to an urgent treatment centre, the system in place will notify the service so you are expected and you will get a timed appointment.

If there is a life-threatening emergency, you should call 999.
