A new directory of stroke-related services available for stroke survivors in Lancashire North

A new Directory of Services offering local residents access to information on stroke related services in Lancashire North has been developed by the Stroke Association.

The Lancashire and South Cumbria Directory of (Life after) Stroke Services has initially been developed to support stroke rehab teams in referring and signposting stroke patients along the pathway to longer term support services. The directory however, also allows stroke survivors, their carers and families, health professionals and voluntary sector organisations, to find services, activities and opportunities available for people affected by stroke.

Dr Gaw, Clinical Chair at NHS Lancashire North Clinical Commissioning (CCG), said: “This is an excellent and simple tool to help people find out what’s out there and to give people a choice of activities and support to suit their needs, health and wellbeing. It shows what a huge range of support there actually is available which can offer enormous benefit to the quality of life for local people. As a GP, it will make it far easier for GPs and other healthcare colleagues if we need to refer our patients to the most appropriate support, whichever organisation provides it.”

Stroke survivors, carers and family members can use the directory to search for organisations that:
- Provide local services to help with everyday tasks
- Increase participation in community life and peer support
- Provide useful equipment, advice or information
- Help improve communication skills
- Provides emotional support
- Provides family and carer support

Dr Gaw added “This directory will go a long way to helping those who’ve suffered a stroke and their families get the help they need once they leave hospital. Stroke can be a devastating condition and lack of suitable or sufficient information can make patients feel anxious and afraid. The directory is a comprehensive list of services which hopefully will go a long way to promoting independence and improving quality of life.”
